Tummy Tuck (Abdominoplasty) in Newport

A tummy tuck, also known as abdominoplasty, is a plastic surgery procedure that can reshape the abdomen by removing excess skin and fat and, where appropriate, tightening the abdominal muscles. It is commonly considered by people who have loose skin around the stomach area after pregnancy, weight loss, ageing or changes to body shape.

Mr Sherif Wilson offers tummy tuck surgery for suitable clients in Newport and South Wales, with procedures available at St Joseph’s Hospital in Newport. During your consultation, Mr Wilson will assess your individual body shape, discuss the different types of abdominoplasty available, and explain what kind of result may be realistic for you.

Is Tummy Tuck Surgery Right For Me?

A tummy tuck is not a weight loss operation, and it is not designed to reduce dress size. Instead, it is usually most suitable for people who are already close to a stable weight but are left with loose, stretched or overhanging skin around the abdomen.

You may be suitable for abdominoplasty if you have:

  • Loose or excess skin following pregnancy
  • Surplus skin and fat after significant weight loss
  • An overhanging lower abdomen that does not improve with diet and exercise
  • Stretch marks or scarring in the lower abdominal area
  • Separated abdominal muscles, also known as divarication of recti

Before deciding whether to go ahead, it is important to have a full consultation with a suitably qualified plastic surgeon. Mr Wilson will take time to understand your concerns, examine your abdomen, and talk through the different surgical options available.

What Does Tummy Tuck Surgery Involve?

There are several different types of tummy tuck surgery. The best option for you will depend on the amount of excess skin, the quality of your skin, whether the abdominal muscles need tightening, and the result you are hoping to achieve.

Mini Abdominoplasty

A mini abdominoplasty may be suitable where there is a smaller amount of loose skin below the belly button. This procedure usually involves removing excess skin from the lower abdomen, leaving a scar low down in the pubic area.

It is generally less extensive than a full tummy tuck, but it is only suitable for certain people. If you have significant loose skin, muscle separation or skin above the belly button, another form of abdominoplasty may be more appropriate.

Standard Abdominoplasty

A standard abdominoplasty is often recommended for people with more noticeable excess skin and fat across the lower abdomen. During surgery, an incision is usually made from hip to hip, and excess skin and fat are removed from the abdominal area.

The abdominal muscles can also be tightened where required. Although this operation leaves a longer scar, it can create a more significant change in abdominal contour.

Fleur-De-Lys Abdominoplasty

A Fleur-De-Lys abdominoplasty may be considered for people with a larger amount of loose skin on both the lower and upper abdomen. This is sometimes suitable after major weight loss, particularly where there is loose skin in both a vertical and horizontal direction.

This procedure involves both a horizontal and vertical scar, which can create an anchor-like shape. It is a more extensive form of tummy tuck and will only be recommended where Mr Wilson feels it is suitable for your body and goals.

Can Liposuction Be Combined With A Tummy Tuck?

Liposuction may sometimes be carried out alongside abdominoplasty, particularly where there is stubborn fat around the flanks, sometimes called love handles. However, liposuction alone does not remove loose skin and is not usually suitable where the main issue is skin laxity.

If your skin has good elasticity and your concern is mainly localised fat rather than loose skin, Mr Wilson may discuss whether liposuction could be more appropriate. If excess skin is the main concern, abdominoplasty is usually more effective.

Consultation For A Tummy Tuck In Newport

Before going ahead with tummy tuck surgery, it is important that you fully understand what the operation involves, what can realistically be achieved, and what your recovery may look like.

Mr Sherif Wilson MB, ChB, MS, FRCS (Plastic Surgery) will be happy to meet with you and answer your questions before surgery. Your consultation will include a careful assessment of your abdomen and a discussion about your medical history, lifestyle, weight stability and expectations.

Mr Wilson has performed many tummy tuck procedures for clients from Bristol, Newport, Bath, Gloucester and the surrounding areas. He will explain whether a mini, standard or Fleur-De-Lys abdominoplasty is likely to be most suitable, and whether liposuction may also be worth considering.

Tummy Tuck After Weight Loss

Losing a significant amount of weight can be a major achievement, but it can sometimes leave behind loose or overhanging skin around the abdomen. This can happen after lifestyle changes, bariatric surgery, or more recently, after using weight loss injections such as Ozempic, Wegovy or Mounjaro.

A tummy tuck is not designed to help you lose weight. Instead, it can be considered once you have already lost weight and are looking to address loose skin, changes to abdominal shape, and in some cases, separated abdominal muscles.

Before considering tummy tuck surgery after weight loss, it is important that your weight is stable and that you are in good general health. During your consultation, Mr Wilson will assess your abdomen, explain which type of abdominoplasty may be suitable, and discuss what can realistically be achieved. You can read more about tummy tuck after weight loss jabs here.

Tummy Tuck After Pregnancy

Pregnancy can place significant strain on the abdominal area. Some people find that, even after weight loss and exercise, they are left with loose skin, stretch marks, a softer lower abdomen or separated abdominal muscles.

A tummy tuck can be considered after pregnancy once you have recovered, your weight is stable, and you are not planning further pregnancies in the near future. The operation is not intended as a way to lose weight, but it can help reshape the abdominal area by removing excess skin and tightening the underlying muscles where appropriate.

Some people consider abdominoplasty as part of a wider post-pregnancy procedure, sometimes known as a mummy makeover. Mr Wilson will discuss whether this is appropriate for you, based on your body, health and goals. You can read more about Tummy Tuck after pregnancy here.

Can You Still Have An Abdominoplasty If You Have Divarication Of Recti?

Yes. If you have divarication of recti, where the abdominal muscles have separated, abdominoplasty can include surgically bringing the muscles back together as well as removing excess skin and fat.

This is something Mr Wilson can assess during your consultation. It is important to remember that abdominoplasty is not intended to reduce weight or replace core strengthening, but it can address muscle separation where surgery is appropriate.

Going Home After Abdominoplasty

The length of your hospital stay will depend on the type of tummy tuck carried out. With a full abdominoplasty, you will usually have dressings on your abdomen and may have drains, which are small plastic tubes attached to suction bottles. These are removed before you go home.

You will usually be asked to wear a pressure garment for at least six weeks after surgery. Mr Wilson will review your healing and advise whether you can stop wearing it or whether it would be helpful to continue for a little longer.

Most people are mobile from day one, but you will need to take things carefully during your recovery. Many clients are advised to take around two weeks off work, although this depends on the type of work you do and the extent of your surgery. Full exercise is usually avoided until around six weeks, depending on your recovery and Mr Wilson’s advice.

Tummy Tuck Newport FAQs

If you are considering a tummy tuck, it is natural to have lots of questions before making a final decision. Mr Sherif Wilson is a consultant plastic surgeon and a leading consultant for plastic surgery at North Bristol NHS Trust. He will be happy to answer your questions during your consultation, and you can also read the frequently asked questions below.

A tummy tuck is usually most suitable for people who are at or close to a stable weight. It is not designed as a weight loss procedure. If you lose a significant amount of weight after surgery, this may affect your result by creating further loose skin.

Most surgeons recommend maintaining a stable weight before going ahead with abdominoplasty. During your consultation, Mr Wilson will discuss your weight, health and goals to help determine whether the timing is right.

It is generally advisable to delay tummy tuck surgery until after you have completed your family. Pregnancy after abdominoplasty can stretch the abdominal skin and muscles again, which may affect the result of surgery.

If you are unsure about timing, Mr Wilson can discuss your plans with you during consultation and help you understand the potential implications.

For a tummy tuck to be effective, there needs to be enough loose skin to remove and reposition. If your skin is too tight, the procedure may not be suitable or may not achieve the result you are hoping for.

Mr Wilson will assess your skin, abdominal shape and muscle tone during your consultation and advise whether a mini, standard or Fleur-De-Lys abdominoplasty may be appropriate.

Tummy tuck surgery can create a flatter and firmer abdominal contour by removing excess skin and tightening the muscles where needed. The final result takes time to settle, as swelling gradually reduces and the tissues heal.

Your outcome will depend on your body shape, skin quality, the type of abdominoplasty performed and how well you follow your aftercare advice.

A tummy tuck removes excess skin and can tighten the abdominal muscles. Liposuction removes localised fat but does not remove loose skin.

If your main concern is loose or overhanging skin, abdominoplasty is usually more suitable. If your skin quality is good and your main concern is stubborn fat, liposuction may be considered. In some cases, both procedures can be combined.

Recovery varies depending on the type of tummy tuck and your general health. Most people need to take some time off work and avoid strenuous exercise for several weeks.

Walking is usually encouraged early in recovery, but heavier activity, lifting and exercise should only be resumed when Mr Wilson advises it is safe. Swelling can take several months to settle fully.

After surgery, you should contact your surgical team if you experience symptoms such as worsening pain, fever, unusual discharge, increasing redness, swelling, shortness of breath, or anything that feels concerning.

Mr Wilson will provide clear aftercare instructions so you know what to expect and when to ask for advice.

Light walking is usually encouraged early after surgery, but strenuous exercise, heavy lifting and abdominal exercises should be avoided until you have been advised it is safe to restart.

Many people are advised to wait around six weeks before returning to fuller exercise, but this depends on your healing and the type of surgery performed.

In the UK, tummy tuck surgery is usually considered a cosmetic procedure and is not commonly available on the NHS. In rare cases, it may be considered where there is a clear medical need, but this depends on strict eligibility criteria.

If you are considering private abdominoplasty, Mr Wilson can discuss the procedure, likely costs and what to expect during consultation.

There are so many options when considering surgery, it can be a bit overwhelming as it's such a huge decision. Sherif was recommended to me by a friend of a friend, who talked very highly of him and his work. My first consultation with Sherif was informative and relaxed, there was no pressure to progress with the surgery and I felt I was in good hands. I was given time and space to make my decision, and felt comfortable asking any further questions. The surgery itself went smoothly, I felt safe and well looked after. My recovery went better than I'd imagined and I was comfortably back at work within 2 weeks. I'm now 11 weeks post op and I'm loving the results - it really is life changing, and I'm so glad I did it, and chose Sherif to do it. Huge thanks to him and his team.

The service received from Mr Wilson and his secretary has been amazing. Kim has always been prompt and professional with all of our contact. At the initial consultation with Mr Wilson, he made me comfortable and at ease. Mr Wilson has always been so kind and considerate and made sure that he explained the options available to me and what each option would include. Mr Wilson was clear about what the results of each option would likely provide and the risks involved. On the day of my surgery Mr Wilson came to see me prior to the surgery to check that I was happy. The results of the surgery were better than I could ever have imagined. I got a small infection a couple of weeks after surgery and Mr Wilson got me in to see him the same day, provided me with antibiotics and it cleared up right away. I'm now 7 weeks post surgery and feeling right back to normal.

Wow, I honestly don’t even know where to start. I guess a MASSIVE thank you to Mr Wilson, he has quite frankly changed my life. From the moment I met him I knew that he was the surgeon for me, he listened to what I wanted, was very understanding and caring, he was honest with the outcome and explained everything perfectly. I knew that I had to have him as my surgeon for my Breast Reduction, the minute I left the consultation I booked my surgery, I only had 7 weeks to wait, I was beyond excited. About a week before the surgery I came to see Mr Wilson again just to settle my nerves, and he did just that. My surgery went incredibly well, I felt amazing and just so excited to see the results, I had no complications whatsoever and pain was minimal, the heeling process was so so smooth too. One year on and I am still on cloud nine, the scars are basically non existent and my new breasts are PERFECT. I’m not over exaggerating when I say Mr Wilson has changed my life, he really has done just that, and I will be forever grateful. Will recommend Mr Wilson over and over again to anyone wanting ANY surgery with him. He is incredible!
