Tummy Tuck After Weight Loss
Losing a significant amount of weight can be a positive step for your health and confidence, but it can sometimes leave behind loose, stretched or overhanging skin around the abdomen. This can happen after lifestyle changes, bariatric surgery, or more recently, after the use of weight loss injections such as Ozempic, Wegovy or Mounjaro.
A tummy tuck is not designed to help with weight loss. Instead, it can be considered once weight loss has already taken place and the main concern is excess skin, altered abdominal contour, or separated abdominal muscles.
Before considering tummy tuck surgery after weight loss, it is important that your weight is stable and that you are in good general health. Mr Wilson will assess your abdomen, discuss which type of abdominoplasty may be most suitable, and explain what can realistically be achieved. You can read more about tummy tuck after weight loss injections in this article.
Tummy Tuck After Pregnancy
Pregnancy can affect the abdomen in several ways. Some people are left with loose skin, stretch marks, a softer lower abdomen or muscle separation that does not fully improve after weight loss, exercise or time.
A tummy tuck can be considered once you have recovered from pregnancy, your weight is stable, and you are not planning further pregnancies in the near future. The procedure is not intended as a way to lose weight, but it can help reshape the abdomen by removing excess skin and tightening the underlying muscles where appropriate.
Some people consider abdominoplasty as part of a wider post-pregnancy procedure, sometimes called a mummy makeover. Mr Wilson will discuss whether this is suitable for you, based on your body, health and goals. You can read more about tummy tuck post pregnancy here.
Can You Still Perform An Abdominoplasty If I Have Divarication Of Recti?
Yes. If you have divarication of recti, where the abdominal muscles have separated, an abdominoplasty can include surgically bringing the muscles back together as well as removing excess skin and fat.
This will be assessed during your consultation. It is important to remember that a tummy tuck is not designed as a weight loss procedure, but it can address loose skin and muscle separation where surgery is appropriate.
Going Home After Abdominoplasty
The length of your hospital stay will depend on the type of tummy tuck carried out. With a full abdominoplasty, you will usually have dressings on your abdomen and may have drains, which are small plastic tubes attached to suction bottles. These are removed before you go home.
You will usually be asked to wear a pressure garment for at least six weeks after surgery. Mr Wilson will review your recovery and advise whether you can stop wearing it at that stage or whether it would be helpful to continue for a little longer.
Most people are mobile from day one, but recovery needs to be gradual. Many clients are advised to take around two weeks off work, although this will depend on your job and the extent of surgery. Full exercise is usually avoided until around six weeks, depending on your healing and Mr Wilson’s advice.
